If you’re a high school student aged 15 to 18, you can get a head start on your academic goals by taking part in the UBC Future Global Leaders program. During each three-week online course, you’ll explore your academic interests with a top-tier university, try a popular university course without the stress of exams, and make friends from around the world. These pre-university courses are a great way to work out what your passions are while you’re still in high school, and prepare yourself for success at university and beyond.

What can you study?

Academic courses

You can choose from five engaging academic courses, all taught by UBC instructors. Each 10-week course will take place online, so it will be accessible from anywhere. You’ll have the chance to meet other students from around the world as you attend your live virtual classes that are offered on Wednesday evenings or Saturdays.

  • Introduction to Business Foundations: Study the importance of core business functions, including finance, accounting, marketing, and human resource management. If you’re interested in pursuing a degree in business, this course is the perfect fit.
  • Introduction to Engineering: If you’re fascinated by engineering, architecture, or applied science, this course is for you. Find out about the engineering profession, and the disciplines of chemical, civil, computer, electrical, environmental, and mechanical engineering.
  • Introduction to Psychology: Learn about the scientific study of the mind and behaviour. This program is excellent if you’re thinking of majoring in psychology or if you’re interested in the social sciences, applied sciences, or medicine.
  • Introduction to Philosophy: Consider how philosophy is applied to contemporary questions, such as how to design intelligent robots, the ethics of scientific and technological innovation, and how to evaluate government policies. If you’re interested in law, politics, journalism, or any other profession that values reasoning and problem-solving, this is a great choice for you.
  • Artificial intelligence and society: Analyze critical questions around the impact of machine learning and how computer algorithms are changing our world. This course is ideal if you’re interested in artificial intelligence, creativity, art, governance, or the ethics of technology.

Non-academic courses

  • Your Guide to Getting into a Canadian University:  Maximize your chances of getting into your top-choice university by learning what you can do now to make your applications stand out. Learn how to write university applications that catch the attention of admissions committees. There are no live virtual classes but you can email your instructor any time, and receive personal feedback on your writing assignments. This online course is three weeks long.

Who can take part?

To register for a UBC Future Global Leaders course, you must be 15 to 18 years old and have completed Grade 10 or equivalent. We suggest that you have a grade point average of 78% or letter grade B or higher, or a minimum IB final grade of 5. You don’t need to submit any transcripts to register.

If you want to register for an academic course and English is not your first language, we recommend an IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score of 6.0 or equivalent, or TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) Internet-based score of 80 or equivalent. You don’t need to provide your scores, and can self-assess your own levels.

Dates and deadlines

All five academic courses run from late September to November.

The Your Guide to Getting into a Canadian University course runs from October 25 to November 14.
